Business owner surprised on doorstep with national award during live zoom ceremony
A Manchester business has won an award for being the nation’s best digital business at this year’s Small Awards.
Kintsugi Clothing won the Digital Star Award, which celebrates businesses that operate only online and use digital channels to engage and grow their customer base.
Owner Emma McClelland who started Kintsugi in 2019, was surprised at her home with a trophy during a virtual online awards ceremony that increasingly stunned guests, as eleven businesses across the UK were crowned winners on their doorsteps.
Launched in February 2019 after a year in development, Kintsugi is a disability-friendly clothing company that uses subtle design features to make life easier for disabled wearers. Since the brand’s launch it has been featured on ITV Granada Reports and was, last year, taken on as a brand by online retail behemoth SilkFred.
Reacting to winning the award, Emma commented: “I’m delighted. It feels like disability-first design is being recognised more and more, and it’s just a brilliant boost.”
In its fifth year, The Small Awards is a nationwide search for the smallest and greatest firms in the UK, across all sectors. It is organised annually by Small Business Britain, which champions, inspires and accelerates small businesses in the UK.
“Congratulations to Kintsugi Clothing who impressed our team and judges with their inspiring resilience and dedication,” said Michelle Ovens CBE, Founder of Small Business Britain and the Small Awards.
“It has been a difficult year for the whole small business community, but it is so positive to celebrate the amazing contribution of small firms like Kintsugi Clothing, particularly as we look ahead to brighter times. It was really fun to arrange such an exciting event which surprised and delighted so many business owners.”
The Small Awards were judged by a panel of leading enterprise experts. The inspirational evening took place online, adopting the theme of the upcoming Bond film and featuring entertainment from London’s Phoenix Arts Club
Guests dressed up in black tie and received deliveries of cocktails and canapes from independent brands to toast their success.
